Permits needed to hunt with dogs on Homochitto National Forest

Hunting with dogs is allowed on the Homochitto National Forest between Nov. 1 and Jan. 31, but permits are required, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks said.

“This is a pilot project intended to help provide order and improve safety for hunters, landowners and all forest visitors,” Homochitto District Ranger Bruce Prud’homme said. “We hope this initial step will help all visitors to have a safe and enjoyable experience on the National Forest.
“At the same time, we want to be a good neighbor to nearby landowners and community residents.” […]

Oyster reefs rebuilt in MDMR project

An effort to reestablish more than 1,000 acres of oyster reefs along the Mississippi Coast will wrap up by Sept. 30, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources announced today (Sept. 20).

The Big Momma Crappie Tournament held on Grenada Lake on Saturday (Sept. 17) was a day of perseverance and firsts for Hernando’s Dave and Darlene Roach, who won the Mississippi Crappie Club event with a monster slab weighing 2.41 pounds.

Congressional bill would protect offshore structures for use as artificial reefs

Legislation introduced in the U.S. Congress that would prevent rigs and other Gulf of Mexico structures from being removed as ordered by the U.S. Department of Interior should be passed, the Coastal Conservation Association said today.

The Rigs to Reefs Habitat Protection Act of 2011, introduced by Republican Sen. David Vitter of Louisiana, seeks to allows structures to remain in the Gulf as artificial reefs. […]

Bill to protect hunting, fishing on federal lands introduced in Congress

A bill introduced into the U.S. House of Representatives will, if approved, ensure that recreational fishing, hunting and shooting sports will be recognized as public activities on federal lands, the American Sportfishing Association announced.

The Recreational Fishing and Hunting Heritage and Opportunities Act, introduced by Representatives Dan Benishek (R-MI) and Dan Boren (D-OK), was introduced Sept. 2 and directs federal land-management agencies such as the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management to apply the multi-use mandates in their management plans to support public access to our nation’s public lands.
