Mississippi Coastal Cleanup nets 2,064 bags of trash

Nearly 3,000 volunteers picked up 2,064 bags of trash along 158 miles of the Mississippi coast on Saturday (Oct. 15) as part of the 23rd Mississippi Coastal Cleanup, the Division of Marine Resources announced.

More than 120,000 pounds of trash was bagged in Hancock, Harrison and Jackson counties during the event, which was part of the International Coastal Cleanup – the world’s largest volunteer effort to clean up the marine environment. […]

New commercial-fishing regs proposed

The Commission on Mississippi Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks has issued a public notice of intent that would require anyone selling crawfish caught from Mississippi public waters to obtain a commercial fishing license.

The new regulations also provide special permits to remove aquatic nuisance species and targets Asian carp and gar. These are only a few of the changes projected for these statewide regulations.

Jake Cox wanted little brother Joseph to kill the buck. He really did.

And then the 169-inch buck stepped out in front of the elder Cox brother last Wednesday (Oct. 5), and now there is a slight controversy in the family.

Vote now in monthly Trail Cam Contest

Voting began this morning in the September edition of the Trail Cam Contest, with user determining who walks away with the monthly Sportsman Gear prize package.

“We had some great trail-cam photos submitted in September, and the decision of which four to place in the monthly voting session was difficult,” MississippiSportsman.com’s Andy Crawford said. “But there are some really neat shots for our users to choose from in deciding the winner.” […]

Study shows bass don’t move much

Like any other non-migratory critter, each largemouth bass has a home range, loosely defined as the area that the animal uses regularly in its quest for survival and reproduction each year. Lots of anglers assume that largemouth bass rove widely in their pursuit of food and oxygenated water.

While indeed, evidence exists that young school-size bass do move extensive distances, particularly in open reservoirs, most of the time bass just don’t go that far. As hard as it is for fishermen to admit, a lot of times when they can’t buy a bite, the fish haven’t left the area. […]

DMR coastal art contest announced

In an effort to generate an interest in Mississippi’s coastal resources and promote the awareness of their value, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources is holding its 11th annual student art contest for third- through sixth-graders in Hancock, Harrison and Jackson counties.

Winning entries will be featured in the DMR’s 2012 Marine Information Calendar, and the original artwork will be on public display. […]
