Pearl River sampling begins to ensure seafood, water safety

Louisiana paper mill admits discharge caused massive Pearl River fish kill

Temple-Inland Inc. admitted a discharge at it’s Bogalusa, La., plant caused the massive Pearl River fish kill that has included bass, catfish, paddlefish and federally protected Gulf sturgeon.

“We never lose sight that we are members and supporters of the Bogalusa area and apologize for the impact this issue at the mill has had on the Pearl River, its aqua culture (sic) and surrounding communities,” Temple-Inland’s Doyle Simmons said today (Aug. 17) in a news release. “We are working diligently and expeditiously to remove the fish kill and restore the quality of the river.” […]

New professional bass-fishing tournament trail created

Twenty-four of the nation’s top bass anglers have teamed with the Outdoor Channel to form a new professional fishing circuit designed to test anglers’ prowess in putting together patterns quickly.

The Major League Fishing trail will allow anglers to weigh as many legal fish as they catch, but competitors must begin each event without the benefit of user-generated GPS waypoints or practice. Youth Participation Initiative deadline approaching, MDWFP announces

Mississippi groups wanting to help recruit youth into hunting and fishing have until Aug. 15 to apply for funding from the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, the agency reported.

The Youth Participation Initiative was established to provide funding for the purpose of educating youth in the areas of hunting, fishing, conservation and safety. During 2010, the YPI Program provided a total of $144,999.00 to help fund 23 projects across Mississippi. […]
