Mississippi has a rich deer-stand history. Ol’ Man got its start in Hattiesburg. Millennium Treestands’ main office is located in Pearl. And Sportsman Condos come right out of West Point.
As far as box stands are concerned, hunters would be hard pressed to find one as reliably manufactured, easy to use and as comfortable to hunt out of than the Sportsman Condos.
And their one-piece construction makes them what Mark Bernegger with Southern Outdoor Technologies dubbed “woods ready.”
“You won’t spend hours, literally, putting pieced blinds together (with the Sportsman Condo),” Bernegger said. “There are no missing parts, and they hold up better in the wind than ‘panel blinds,’ and they won’t vibrate or rattle.”
In fact, Sportsman Condos are so solid that the company stands behind their product without offering a standard warranty.
“We just don’t have problems with the units except for customer induced,” he went on. “Things like not anchoring them to the ground, not strapping them down when transporting on a truck or trailer. But if you’ve got a door or window latch that needs replacing, we send it — no questions asked.”
Sportsman Condos are lifted in the air with 4×4 posts, but Southern Outdoors Technologies has a 10-foot leg limit on the units.
“It’s a liability issue, not a strength issue,” Bernegger explained. “All the young bucks want to go high, and all the old bucks want to go low. Really, the biggest issue is people wanting to put them on 16-foot 4x4s. Most people don’t understand the physics of trying to stand something on 16-foot legs.
“That’s when you get into what I call ‘redneck engineering,’ and the problems start.”
In fact, most folks set up their Condos on 8-foot legs that are easier to handle. You’re already in an enclosed box that traps your scent, so going up much higher than that can be overkill.
Bernegger said once the Sportsman Condos are lifted in the air they should be cross-braced to give them like-a-rock stability. And he strongly recommends anchoring them to the ground.
“We offer an anchor kit, as well as other helpful tips to anchor their investment,” Bernegger said. “Bottom line: You can anchor all you want, but if Mother Nature wants it bad enough, she’s going to get it. However, you can slow her down.”
Southern Outdoor Technologies has been building the Sportsman’s Condo for 13 years, and they have been blessed with customers all over North America. Sixty-eight percent of their clients are repeat customers, which the company feels speaks volumes for their product.
The SC2 is the company’s best-selling model, and they have some exciting things in the pipeline that they hope to launch by October.
