When Jonathan Cleveland went to bed on the night of Jan. 15, he had plans to be in a deer stand the following day. However, when he climbed out of bed the next morning, one look outside gave him second thoughts: It was warm, with south-southwest winds gusting to 25 miles per hour. […]
Michael Rogillio was happy when his father Ricky Rogillio downed a double drop-tine whitetail trophy on Nov. 30 while hunting at Giles Island Hunting Club. But the 22-year-old never dreamed he’d have a chance to find out what the saying “like father, like son” meant 61 days later at the same place. […]
This is my inaugural column in Mississippi Sportsman based around the general topic of trail-camera scouting. Each month I will share advice, tips, tactics, strategies and techniques regarding the use of digital scouting cameras that have proven useful to me over time in the successful pursuit of whitetail deer on my farm in west-central Mississippi. Clara Grace Bozeman has been deer hunting with her dad Harvey for a few years now, and she harvested her first buck at the young age of 10.
“Clara Grace told me she wanted to go hunting and use her own gun as well,” Harvey Bozeman said. “So I bought her a 7mm-08 Browning A-Bolt, and we went hunting the next year and she killed her first deer with it. And she’s never missed since!”

All Johnnie Dupont could see of the big buck slipping along the ridge was the front shoulders and rear end.
But after seeing a few deer easing through the woods ahead of the hounds released for a Dec. 27 dog drive in the Homochitto National Forest, Dupont kept his eyes on this one that had stopped to look and listen. […]
Fifteen-year-old Josh Alford of Brandon knew what buck he wanted to kill when he hit the woods with his brother and uncle during Christmas break because the big 12-point typical had been captured on trail-cam photos several times.
What Alford didn’t know until he killed it on Dec. 29 was that it was just a monster Yazoo County deer: It has been green scored by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks at 192 gross inches. […]
Last Wednesday (Jan. 18) was the final day of Mississippi’s Deer Management Zone 1 modern-rifle season, and Ricky Sullivan was in his shooting house as he had been countless times during the long season.
He had lived in that stand the previous week, missing only that Tuesday because of work, because bucks were running does seemingly everywhere across East Mississippi. […]
