Madison County hunt yeilds 171-inch bruiser

The light of enthusiasm tends to dim somewhat over the years as some deer hunters waiting on a chance at a trophy buck. This might describe the buck-hunting tenure of Jack Webb of Madison County, but his long wait is over.

Webb took that proverbial “buck of a lifetime” on Dec. 27. The 170-class deer has renewed the hunter’s energy and dedication to the sport. […]

200-inch buck killed after two-year pursuit

August 2009 marked the beginning of an amazing whitetail adventure for 24-year-old Casey Orr, who decided to do a little pre-season scouting on his family’s farm in Choctaw County in preparation for the upcoming deer season.

Jerry Tassin was sitting in an oak bottom on the 40-acre family piece of Lamar County property when his phone rang Christmas afternoon.

Editor’s note: This buck was later certified as the state-record archery buck, topping the category in the Magnolia Records at 172 4/8 Pope & Young.

Will Rives is a die-hard hunter who is lucky enough to hunt almost every day during the winter. But on Dec. 15, he woke up at 4:30, got dressed and stepped outside to find a south wind and 60-degree weather – and then promptly walked back inside, crawled in bed and went back to sleep.

“That’s not like me, it usually doesn’t matter if it’s 80 outside,” Rives said. “When we knock off (of work) for the wintertime, I hunt every day. I’m relentless.” […]
