This month, the big smallmouth start suspending off bluff banks and holding off bluff points at Pickwick Lake in northeast Mississippi. From the middle to the end of January is the best time to catch a trophy smallmouth at Pickwick. We catch these suspending fish on Smithwick Suspending Rogues and Mann’s Stone Jigs. I’m addicted to big spotted bass. They fight hard, they’re fun to catch and at this time of year, you often can catch a bunch of big ones — 2- to 5-pounders almost every day in November — at Bay Springs Lake.

Two different patterns always produce bass for me during September on Ross Barnett. The early September pattern is a spotted bass pattern up the river.
