It was fitting that Shane Ragon fell to his knees when he first put his hands on the massive antlers of the buck he killed Oct. 6 in the middle of a sweet potato field near his home in Calhoun County.
Heck, he was on both knees when he made the shot.
“I am not ashamed to tell you that I got very emotional when I grabbed those antlers and lifted them up and saw what I had done,” the 40-year-old Ragon said. “I cried. I laughed. I cried again. And I laughed again. […]
The Leaf River narrows so the water flows over just one end of a log jam and into a pool of deeper water. The flow is wide enough for a canoe to pass without problem, and Harold Turner guides the canoe to the shallow side of the bend where it rests in the eddy current below the log jam […]
We’re giving the November issue of Mississippi Sportsman a final polish this afternoon (Oct. 16) before it gets shipped to subscribers and newsstands across the state next week. […]
The squirrel-hunting season in Mississippi got off to a slow start last weekend, due in large part to very warm temperatures, according to two avid hunters in the central part of the state. […]
Baldwin’s Tyler Nelson had been watching a Marshall County buck develop a massive set of antlers all summer long by using trail cameras set up on property owned by his girlfriend’s family.
“I’ve probably got 1,000 pictures of him over the summer,” Nelson said.
And the deer wasn’t a secret to his girlfriend’s family because it routinely visited a cut bean field every evening.
But Nelson took advantage of the fact that his girlfriend’s family didn’t have any big bow hunters, and now that monster buck — which has been greenscored at nearly 164 inches Pope & Young — to arrow the deer on Oct. 9. […]
Restocked about four years ago, Bogue Homa Lake is really producing a lot of bass, with a few weighing 5 to 7 pounds. Bogue Homa is about 1,000 acres with plenty of grass, lily pads and cypress trees, as well as well-defined creek channels with stumps sitting in them. […]

Although he didn’t know it at the time, Roger Stegall got a glimpse into the future while he frantically tried to find a fifth fish to finish a limit during a Red Man tournament back in 1991.
After launching at Bay Springs that morning, the Iuka-based professional bass angler ran up to Pickwick Lake to catch most of his fish.
That effort left him one fish short.
He made the 35-mile run back to Bay Springs hoping he could catch just one more bass. […]
Having grown up hunting his family’s farm in rural Claiborne County, 23-year-old Patrick McManus is no stranger to massive whitetails. His walls are adorned with a number of these monsters, but none had been taken with stick and string.
An avid bowhunter since the young age of 12, McManus has harvested dozens of does with archery gear; however, due to an intense deer management program combined with his own personal choice to hold out for a mature whitetail, McManus had yet to realize his dream of taking a trophy buck with his bow. […]
