Officials recently poured about 40,000 largemouth bass fingerlings into the Smithville Pool of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway to help bolster the healthy population already found there, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks said today (July 6).
The 3-inch bass were provided by the Private John Allen National Fish Hatchery near Tupelo, and were surplus fish the hatchery had not planned to stock anywhere else. […]
Arkansas’ Jeff Johnston put a limit of bass weighing 15 pounds, 5 ounces in the boat June 25 to win the Bass Fishing League stop on Grenada Lake. Mississippi’s Roger Stegall was just less than a pound back in the BFL event.

The Bass Fishing League will stop at Pickwick Lake out of Iuka on June 4 for the third of five stops in the circuit’s Mississippi Division. The lake will be flooded with as many as 400 boaters and co-anglers for the event.
“Lower Pickwick is typically all off-shore ledge fishing,” FLW pro Jonathan Newton of Alabama said. “The spawn was pretty late this year so the fish are just starting to move out, and they have been pretty slow moving to deeper water.
“There are still a few bass that will be shallow, but I would target schooling fish in about 12-14 feet of water.” […]

But last Tuesday (Jan. 25), the 14-year-old Watts made his shot at the 160-class deer count.

A 112-acre cedar thicket may not seem like prime woods for killing trophy bucks, but then again, it depends on where the thicket is. The cedar thicket David Coleman hunts is apparently in exactly the right spot. […]

It’s hard to imagine what it takes to manage an 18- to 20-foot fishing rod anchored with nearly a pound of weight and possibly 2 or 3 pounds of hefty fish dangling off the end. Combine that with a boat moving at speeds up to 2 mph, and suffice to say that power trolling isn’t for the faint of heart. […]
