Some general procedures to properly set up and monitor a trail camera are:
Before the set-up
• Read the trail camera owner\’s manual, repeatedly.
• Collect extra batteries.
• Buy several memory cards.
• Have extra tie straps or bungee cords.
• Take along a small folding saw and clippers.
• Bring a bottle of scent eliminator.
• Wear rubber gloves.
• Have cable lock and extra keys.
• Use lens wipes.
Set-up
• Mount the camera with the lens pointing north, away from the sun\’s path.
• Position the camera 45 degrees to the targeted area to gain a wide field of view.
• Hang the camera 15 to 20 feet away from the spot to be photographed.
• Securely strap the camera to a tree or post 24 to 36 inches off the ground.
• Use a saw or clippers to clear away all limbs or obstructing vegetation.
• Be sure camera is aimed on a parallel plane to the ground.
• Turn camera on, making sure all settings are correct.
• Try test mode to confirm camera function; trigger once before leaving.
• Lightly spray scent eliminator around (but not on) camera area and mount.
After the set-up
• Walk to the camera to trigger testing function.
• Turn camera off.
• Swap memory cards.
• Test batteries or replace.
• Reconfirm all settings.
• Check camera alignment.
• Clean lens and sensor.
• Resecure and lock.
• Trigger again for function.
• Use scent eliminator.
