Hunting gear for city bucks

It’s smart to keep a low profile when hunting within the city limits of a town.

The majority of in-town deer-hunting situations are likely going to be limited to the use of archery gear. This is because most municipalities have ordinances against the discharge of firearms of any kind within the city limits. Of course, there may be some unique exceptions to the rule.

For example, the City of Clinton annexed additional land a few years ago, but in the process it took in some property that was previously designated for agricultural use. The owner ran cows on the land and also rented the farmland to a local farmer to raise corn and soybeans.

In addition to that, the owner leased to the property for deer and turkey hunting.

The city implied it wanted to put a stop to the gun hunting on this land, but the provisions protecting this land use were already state law, which trumped local law. The caveat was the hunters on the land did use firearms to hunt, so for the time being this is still permitted. The hunters do not flaunt it.

Good thing that archery gear looks less intimidating to the uniformed.

Bow hunters should pick the smallest, least noticeable bow to carry in public areas. Broadhead points should be kept covered until needed.

Bow shooters should prepare for close-quarter shots and work on accuracy: Nothing could be worse than tracking a wounded deer through a residential neighborhood.

City deer hunters also should check into the legal use of a crossbow. These horizontal bows are increasing in popularity, accuracy and effectiveness. This hunting tool could be a good alternative fit to traditional bows for this type of hunting.

Most crossbows these days can be fitted with a conventional scope that could give in-town hunters an edge.

Though arrow shots could be relatively close, a good pair of binoculars will come in handy to maintain observation of the hunting area. Since you are hunting in town, it would not be unheard of to have a kid or an adult to come hiking through the woods. Keep a watch over your area.

A rangefinder is a welcomed tool, as well, to enhance the accuracy of shots. It would help establish preset shooting distances from the blind or tree stand location.

Be sure to have your cell phone handy just in case you have to call a friend to help you bring a big buck out of the woods.
