Fun-filled fall

In October, sportsmen have a wide variety of hunting and fishing opportunities. (Photo by Brian Cope)

When I was a kid, I didn’t like this time of year. School was back in full swing, days were shorter, and even though I enjoyed playing sports and other extracurricular activities at school, it kept me out of the woods and off the water.

And October, to me, represented the doorway to winter, my least favorite time of year.

Even into adulthood, I cringed at the thought of fall. But that changed when I began realizing how great the fishing is this time of year, in both freshwater and saltwater. And, squirrel season (my favorite hunting season) opens this month.

Hunt, fish, grill

On top of that, deer season is going strong, and multiple other seasons are open. Within the past 10 years or so, I’ve grown to love the month of October. My only complaint is that winter is coming quickly, but that’s just another great reason to get outdoors right now, as often as possible, to savor every bit of outdoor enjoyment.

October is one of those months you can wake up early, get in the deer stand, get home in time for breakfast, then hit the water for some fishing or shrimping, head in for lunch, then go back out to shoot some squirrels, then get home in time to get the grill going and cook up a smorgasbord of whatever you harvested that day.

Eating it all outside while watching the moon rise, and feeling the slight bite of cool, fall air makes it all the more enjoyable.

You can catch me in the woods this month. Or on the water. Or both. I hope to see you out there.
