Bill to protect hunting, fishing on federal lands introduced in Congress

A bill introduced into the U.S. House of Representatives will, if approved, ensure that recreational fishing, hunting and shooting sports will be recognized as public activities on federal lands, the American Sportfishing Association announced.

The Recreational Fishing and Hunting Heritage and Opportunities Act, introduced by Representatives Dan Benishek (R-MI) and Dan Boren (D-OK), was introduced Sept. 2 and directs federal land-management agencies such as the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management to apply the multi-use mandates in their management plans to support public access to our nation’s public lands. Reward offered in golden eagle shooting

A $2,500 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons who shot golden eagle near Iuka that was discovered in April, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks announced today (June 15).

The eagle, which survived and is undergoing rehabilitation at the Jackson Zoo, was discovered in the Burnsville community near County Road 306 and Tishomingo County on April 7, and an investigation by state and federal officials has revealed the eagle was shot between March 15 and April 7. […]

Alligators and snakes among wildlife displaced by Mississippi River flooding

The rising levels of the Mississippi River and its tributaries will disperse alligators, snakes and other wildlife to new locations, and residents should be prepared for encounters, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks said today (May 18).

“If snakes are encountered, it is always best to keep your distance, since most snake bites occur when people try to handle or kill them,” MDWFP’s Alligator Program Leader Ricky Flynt said. […]
