The fall transition
Lakes and reservoirs go through annual cycles. Some of the changes are obvious; others are subtle, even invisible to the angler. These changes affect the distribution and feeding behavior of your favorite game fish. […]

When checking out at the Academy Sports & Outdoors store in Ridgeland recently, the cashier put a free copy of “Mississippi Outdoor Digest” magazine in my sack full of crankbaits. This magazine is produced by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks once a year. […]
The smallest state record fish is the longear sunfish at only 0.21 pounds. How hard can it be to beat 0.21 pounds? I mean, shoot, a good-sized crappie minnow weighs more than that, doesn’t it? […]
As Sardis Lake fishermen prepare for what is predicted to be a great month of crappie fishing, state fisheries director Ron Garavelli offers some ominous October advice. […]
Perhaps it is time for the fishing team, Never Satisfied, to consider a name change. […]
The 2013 Bassmaster Central Opens will stop in Mississippi, when Ross Barnett Reservoir will host the tournament circuit’s final event on Oct. 17-19, 2013, B.A.S.S. announced. […]
As we have many times in the past few years when we need fillets quickly for a weekend fish fry, my partner and I hooked up the boat and headed to Calling Panther Lake near Crystal Springs Wednesday (Sept. 19).
The 500-acre Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks lake didn’t let us down. Using spinning gear, 8-pound fluorocarbon leader off 10-pound braid, and drop shot worms, we quickly started picking off our targets — undersized bass that are in great number in Panther.
So much so that MDWFP biologists urge fishermen to take as many as they want, up to 30 apiece a day, of bass under 20 inches. […]
A July press release from Johnson Outdoors Marine Electronics begins, “Continuing the evolution of GPS trolling-motor navigation, Minn Kota’s i-Pilot Link utilizes GPS technology and ethernet connectivity to achieve new levels of boat control.”
Having attended a webinar on this new system, I was already thinking about how much that opening sentence is going to mean to fishermen. […]
Smallmouth bass wear the moniker of “smallies” as if they have a chip on their shoulder — something to prove. What they lack in size, they make up for in brute strength and feisty attitude.

“Pickwick is not the only place in Mississippi to catch a smallmouth bass,” Iuka’s Roger Stegall said. “But the size of the lake and the smallmouths population concentration make it the best Mississippi water to consider.” […]
A 54-year-old Biloxi man died in a boating accident in the Mississippi Sound early this morning (Sept. 16), the Sun Herald reported. […]
Red minnows will be in this month, as well as bull tarpon, redfish, cobia, king mackerel and Spanish mackerel. […]
The bass are moving out of their deepwater summer patterns and into shallow water in September. Two patterns — fishing the riprap and the lily pads — will work all month, but they’ll probably produce better in the middle and at the end of the month. […]
