The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Park’s Visitor Education Center (VEC) adjacent to Enid Lake will host a Kid’s Fish Identification Program on Saturday, April 14 at 2 p.m. Young anglers can learn how to identify the many different species of fish found in Enid Lake and other lakes and ponds across the state. Fish stockings at Columbus and Aberdeen Lakes

On March 28, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) stocked approximately 200,000 Florida-strain largemouth bass fingerlings into Columbus and Aberdeen Lakes on the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway. The fish were reared at MDWFP’s Turcotte Fish Hatchery near Canton.

According to Tyler Stubbs, MDWFP Fisheries Biologist, the goal of the Florida-strain bass stockings is to help increase the number of trophy-sized (> 5 pounds) bass in these two lakes. […]

Big Buck Bounty winners honored

Primitive was a recurring theme Saturday (March 24)at the ninth annual Big Buck Bounty awards ceremony, celebrating a lot of massive racks at the Ag & Forestry Museum in Jackson.

Three of the four winners in the men’s and women’s divisions were taken during Mississippi’s primitive weapon seasons, including the contest’s overall winner, a 192 1/8-inch non-typical buck taken in Marshall County by Calvin Alderson of Olive Branch with a .45-70 rifle. […]

Monroe holds 10-ounce lead on third day of Okeechobee Elite Series stop

Nothing short of a heroic effort Saturday could have knocked Ish Monroe of Hughson, Calif., off his lead of 13 pounds, 11 ounces in the Bassmaster Elite Series Power-Pole Slam on Lake Okeechobee.

Meet Chris Lane, almost-hero. He brought 31 pounds, 3 ounces to the scales Saturday (March 24) and put it up against Monroe’s 18 pounds, 2 ounces. The result was Monroe, 77-6, Lane 76-12.

Suddenly, after trailing Monroe from afar after two days, Lane was only 10 ounces behind. […]
